New South Wales

We’ve been careful about what fruit and veg we bring across state borders. When we crossed into NSW there we no signs for any quarantine restrictions though. Just as well as we went in and out of Vic and NSW three times in a few days.

A Little History

Human remains discovered in 1968 and 1974 at Mungo, southwestern New South Wales, are the oldest so far uncovered in Australia, dating from about 46,000 to 50,000 years ago. (Encyclopaedia Britannica – https://www.britannica.com/place/New-South-Wales/History).

NSW was the first colony established by the Brits. It was first claimed for Britain by Captain (he was a Lieutenant at the time) James Cook on his first voyage in 1770. Although the Dutch first sighted and landed in Australia in 1606, that same year, a Spanish expedition led by Pedro Fernandez Quiros landed in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), believing that they discovered the fabled southern continent, called it “Austrialia del Espiritu Santo” (Southern Land of the Holy Spirit). Australia was not formally founded though until 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip led the First Fleet from Britain to establish Australia as a penal colony.

Our Journey

We crossed the border into NSW from Vic at Wadonga (Vic)/ Albury (NSW). After our stay in Corowa, we went to Coolamon – a lovely little caravan park. The small town was really quaint. It had really old shops (I’m talking 100 years old) next to shops that would not be out of place in the most fancy city.

What made Coolamon a good Caravan Park? Lovely, grass sites which were level. It was quiet, had all the facilities, short walk to supermarket and town and only $25 a night with power, water and sullage. Hard to beat.

Change mechanism in this shop – ok, it might have been a museum
I just like this sign

Until next time…
