“When I get older, losing my hair…”

As the song goes “many years from now”. By the Beatles, “When I’m 64”, in case you are wondering. I played this song on my morning tea, at work on my 64th birthday. Well, that was many years ago now.
When I was young, very young, as in a child, I remember thinking that when I grow up, I’m not going to do these things that I see grown-ups doing. Of course, when I grew up I forgot just about everything that I had made up my mind not to do. Except one thing. Growing up in England, I noticed that drivers were particularly impatient with learner drivers and constantly tooted their horn at them. I didn’t like that. I don’t do that. I wonder about all the other things though that I do that my child self noticed and disliked.
Well, I’m definitely approaching my senior years (many would say that I’ve been there for a while). However, I still hear and see older people who say and do things that I don’t want to do. Now, I’m going to make a list so that I can remember:
- Don’t become a grumpy old man. This is a biggie. It’s too easy to go down this road.
- Continue to be grateful. For everything. In all situations.
- Listen to others. Be interested in them – this is way more important than getting my point across.
- Don’t talk about my ailments, aches and pains. Now I’m blessed that I don’t have too many at this point in time, but rarely is this an interesting topic of conversation.
- Be curious. The world is changing. People change. What worked yesterday won’t necessarily work today or tomorrow. Continue to learn.
- Don’t live in the past. Yes, prices were cheaper (mostly). But there is no future living in the past.
- Don’t worry about tomorrow – money, health, relationships, anything. I have a really, really good friend who is above all those things and “owns the cattle on a thousand hills”. There is no fear when I’m close to Him.
That’s all for now. Feel free to comment on other things that you don’t want to do when you are older.
