The Blessings of Growing Older: A Personal Perspective

Yes, that is not a misprint. There are joys to getting older. No, I’m not totally delusional. I have now reached the 3 score years and 10 mark (70 years old for those who didn’t do old school maths). Yes, I know that there are many downsides that come with advanced years, but I want to look at the positives – and there are many. We don’t often look at those blessings.

Positives

  • We have actually made it to a “senior” age. That is worth celebrating. It has not been a smooth ride!
  • We have had a lifetime of experience. Let me make it more personal – I have had a lifetime of experience. There have been amazing mountain top (metaphorical as well as literal) experiences. And there have also been deep dark valleys to traverse through. I can look back in wonder at all of them. The mountain tops have been refreshment for my soul. In the deep dark valleys I have learnt and grown more than at other times – as painful as they have been. And there have been way more mountain top experiences that deep dark valleys.
  • One of the (greatest?) joys about getting older is that currently we have 4 delightful grandchildren and they all live close by. We have good, quality time with our grandies. Three of them came for a sleepover recently (aged 3, 5 and 7 y.o.). They all slept through the night and they love to come here. We love it too – even if we are exhausted afterwards.
  • Growing in wisdom – I am not as rash as I used to be. Yes, there is a long way to go but I want to continue on that journey towards wisdom.
  • I have a few good friends that I have been doing life with for decades now. Mates that I can share any part of my life with.
  • I am married to the love of my life. She is amazing and we’ve been together for nearly 30 years now. I could definitely write a lot more on how much of a blessing she is. Perhaps another time?
  • We are part of and active in our local church. We have a good church family. Part of that is to give back to community. We also have a good blood-related family.
  • I don’t have to do paid work! But can do unpaid work, which feels really good.
  • Plus I get to make and teach pottery, play golf once a week (more mates) and go to the gym twice a week.

This is not meant to be a post about bragging about how good my life is – not at all! I am choosing to look at the blessings in my life. I choose to be grateful even though there are times when life can still be tough. And I have a good God who never leaves me or forsakes me wherever I am at.

What about you? Have you reached a good age and can identify the blessings in your life?

Until next time…

Cheers!! from an octogenarian author, retired from legalese, married to the same gorgeous man for 49 years. From the two boys, one is here, the other one can only communicate his love from another happy planet (1980-2013) that he lives. C’est la vie, right? Along the same positive lines about happy aging, I once wrote to a retirement publication, and guess what? I got one very upset note that ‘I was out of line bragging’ about how we still climb mountains, and she/he was not as lucky for remaining healthy. So I felt bad and not contributed to that publication again. Dee TEzelli, author of adventure books on Amazon.
