Then the Rain Came…

It may not stop until next summer! But no, I’m just being melodramatic. Two days left in England and I’m playing catchup on the blog.

Stamford

After Oxford, we went to Stamford. A gorgeous little town in Lincolnshire. This was a settlement in Norman times.

Isaac Newton

En route to Boston (the original one), we went to Woolsthorpe, the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton. Fascinating place and fascinating man.

Boston and Milestone Birthday

Then onto Boston, Lincolnshire, to see a dear friend and celebrate my beloved’s milestone birthday.

Cambridge

Now Cambridge in the rain.

A day of rain

Cameos of England

  • Historic England is just everywhere and interesting
  • One enigma is solved. All the people are packed into London, Oxford and Cambridge. Including tourists
  • Smoking is still widespread
  • English is a second language in many places – or not a spoken language at all
  • Very modern / forward thinking in many ways, eg. Charging ports on individual bus seats; some supermarkets, you have to scan your bill receipt at a barrier to exit the store – to reduce shoplifting; a lot of electric vehicles – encouraged by no emission or ultra low emission zones
  • Behind the times (perhaps with good reason), eg. Posties on foot with trolleys; plastic bags on some streets with rubbish for bin men to collect and bins manually put in garbage trucks
  • Did I mention smokers everywhere?
  • Museums are free to get in (donation requested) but you have to pay to enter botanic gardens (the opposite in Australia)
  • Beautiful flowers in planter boxes or hanging baskets
  • Fixed the rain problem. We bought an umbrella. It hasn’t rained since

Two days gone. Now at Heathrow airport, en route to Vienna. Goodbye, England. Or should we just say au revoir?

Until next time…
